XSPECTRA SINGLE CRYSTAL MICROSPECTROPHOTOMETER

XSPECTRA is a portable modular instrument for ABSORPTION and FLUORESCENCE measurements in the UV-VIS-NIR spectral range. Spectra can be rapidly recorded from a circular measurement area of about 0.025 mm diameter (or larger, if necessary). Measurements can be performed on crystaline or non-crystalline solids or on picoliter volumes of liquids. The sample can be mounted on an optical goniometer (or placed on a miniature microscope stage (optional). The temperature of the sample can be controlled with commercially available cryocoolers employing an open stream of helium or nitrogen gas in the range 30-350 K. The modular design of the instrument allows measurements to be made in confined places, e.g. in X-ray cameras. The instrument can be used for monitoring elec-tronic transitions in the sample and to correlate electronic transitions with structural transitions in diffraction experiments as a function of time, temperature, pressure, pH etc.

COMPONENTS of the MICROSPECTROPHOTOMETER

The basic optical system has practically no chromatic aberration, and can handle a wide spectral range from vacuum ultraviolet to far infrared. Optical fibres are used to link the microprobes to the lamp and to the diode array detector. It is these fibres that limit the accessible spectral range more than the optical microprobes themselves. The machine consist of the following main components:

OPTICAL GONIOMETER, to accept standard goniometerheads (Huber, Enraf-Nonius, Rigaku, Supper). The unit consist of an observation microscope, sample illumination system, polarisers, phi-axis circle with fine adjustment, phi-axis translation with micrometer and kinematic mounts for optical microprobes. It can also be used for flash freezing crystals (spectra can be recorded from frozen crystals with the spectrophotometer), or for crystal alignment and inspection prior to data collection.

FIBER OPTICS ILLUMINATION LAMP for sample illumination, alignment and manipulation.

OPTICAL MICROPROBES consist of two sets of mirror lenses (magnefication = 15x, working distance = 24 mm), mirror collimator, SMA fiber connector, XYZ alignment stage on a microbench ( compatible with Newport/Microcontrole X26 rail).

QUARTZ OPTICAL FIBRES for UV-VIS measurement only. Lenght: 3m each.
